10 Best Iontophoresis Machines in 2019: Complex Overview And Comparison.

Best Iontophoresis Machines 2019

Excessive sweating affects millions of people and make them feel uncomfortable and insecure in many situations. According to the new search of International Hyperhidrosis Society, almost 5% of the world’s population suffer from abnormal perspiration, also called hyperhidrosis. This condition has several forms and causes, but all hyperhidrosis sufferers experience deterioration in the quality of social, personal and professional life.

Several treatments can be used for reducing symptoms and amount of sweat. In this article, we are going to focus on Iontophoresis, which is a home treatment procedure using a mild electrical current for long-term suppressing of profuse sweating. We will introduce to you the best iontophoresis machines that are available these days.

You will get a deep overview of these machines and detailed comparison in terms of using, price and affordability, technical features and data about the most prominent producers. Pros, cons of particular devices and comparison with other methods for sweat reducing will help you to make more complex image about Iontophoresis.

We hope you will find here everything you need about iontotherapy and iontophoresis devices designed for home treatment. If not, feel free to let your question or opinion in the comment section below the article.

What is Iontophoresis Treatment?

Iontophoresis is a procedure that uses mild electric current for treating excessive sweating. Electrotherapy has been used for treating palmoplantar hyperhidrosis since the 1940s. Since these times, iontophoresis machines have undergone many modifications, and these days iontotherapy belongs to the most effective treatments of excessive sweating. Iontophoresis was initially applied to hands and feet, but current modern machines have adapters that widen treatment for other parts of the body (armpits, head, chest).

There are 2 ways of using according to medical assistance:

  1. Iontophoresis performed by a physician
  2. Iontophoresis performed at home

If you suffer from abnormal sweating, you can ask your dermatologist about the option of iontophoresis. When treating severe cases of primary hyperhidrosis, the expert can add a certain chemical (glycopyrronium bromide or glycopyrrolate) to tap water, what amplifies the effects of therapy.

Probably the best advantage of iontophoresis is the possibility of home use. Most of iontophoresis device producers offer products that can be used for home treating. Due to high efficiency of iontotherapy and relatively low level of side effects and contraindications, iontophoresis seems to be one of the best ways how to get rid of excessive sweating.

How Does Iontophoresis Work For Excessive Sweating?

How does iontophoresis workThe procedure is based on using controllable mild electrical current that acts through tap water directly to the affected area. The current affects sweat glands and limits its functionality. Iontophoresis is based on the principle of ions. These ions have positive or negative polarity according the electrode.

When a mild galvanic current runs through tap water, these ions are pushed into the skin. Iontophoresis treatment when repeated blocks skin pores and prevent sweat from reaching the skin surface. While human body has between 3-5 millions sweat glands, the reduction in sweating in some parts of the body doesn’t affect the whole sweating mechanism and ability to cool the body by sweat.

Basically, during iontophoresis therapy, a patient sets the current level, time of treatment, and puts hands or feet to shallow pans with tap water, alternatively put electrodes (with moistened swabs) to affected parts of of the body. The treatment lasts between 15-20 minutes according to the current and treated area.

What Does an Iontophoresis Device Contain?

Iontophoresis set usually contains:

  • A device (module) producing an electrical current
  • Plastic containers for hands or feet
  • Electrodes
  • Cables
  • Power adapter
  • Manual

Many devices also include patches for underarms and some brands even offer additional electrodes designed for head or chest (that can be purchased).

How to Choose Iontophoresis Machine? Complete Buying Guide.

When you want to choose the right products for your needs, you should consider all important criteria. In the case of iontophoresis machines, you should realize how you want to use it, for what purpose, what are cons and pros of specific devices and what are your preferences. Now, we are going to define essential criteria that can help you to choose the best iontophoresis machine for you.

1. Affected areas

Sweaty armpitsQuestions to ask:

  • What bodily areas do I sweat the most?
  • Do I sweat only in one area (hands, feet, armpits, head), or more?
  • Do I want to have an iontophoresis device that offers additional adapters for different parts of the body?

Note: As you can see in the table, most devices are designed for specific affected areas, mostly hands and feet or armpits. There are only few producers (Electroantiperspirant, Hidrex) offering additional electrodes that can be used for forehead, scalp, chest, or back sweating. You can appreciate this feature of the device now or later in the case when excessive sweating occurs somewhere else on your body.

2. Technical Conveniences And Comfort

Questions to ask:

  • Which types of electric current does the device provide?
  • What is the pain level of specific iontophoresis devices?
  • Does the machine have presets (current level and timer) for specific treatments?
  • Is the machine user-friendly?
  • Has the iontophoresis machine limited voltage?
  • Does the machine have automated polarity alternations?
Current type

Generally, iontophoresis machines use 3 types of electrical current: Direct, Pulsed or Variable pulsed. Devices using direct current transmit 100% voltage during the entire treatment. Devices using pulsed current distributes electric current that always switches between ON and OFF (measured in milliseconds). Variable pulsed current is mix of the direct and pulsed current. It allows prolonging the on the part of the cycle according to the user needs.

While direct current is the most effective, it can affect certain discomfort. For treating underarms, where the skin is more sensitive, a pulsed current is more proper. Variable pulsed current allows the best control and customization for the user.

Adjustable current

Some devices have a possibility to adjust exact current level by the user. It is very helpful function, especially for those with sensitive skin.

Soft Start

To avoid a shock, soft start function adds the current gradually.

Limited Voltage

This prevention and safety feature ensures that your skin won’t be harmed or irritated by too high voltage. The maximum level is usually 60 V.

Treatment Presets

Some devices have preset for particular treatments. It means that the voltage and time of the treatment are set exactly according to the treated parts of the body. It saves time and increases comfort when using the device.

Automatic polarity alternations

This feature eliminates the risk of harm or irritation. Devices with this function automatically change polarity of the current according to pH level of used tap water.

Note: If you want to treat excessive underarm sweating, we recommend to choose a device with the pulsed or variable pulsed current. It can prevent skin irritation in armpits. Adjustable current is also important for harmful treatment of sensitive areas.

3. Construction quality and durability

Question to ask:

  • Is the iontophoresis device solid?
  • Will I travel with the device?
  • Where will I store it?
  • Is the device easy to carry?
  • How does the machine look like?
  • Is the design modern or outdated?

Once you buy an iontophoresis machine, you expect some durability and robustness. The cheaper devices are usually made of fewer quality materials, and the construction can be more fragile. These factors have a direct impact on the price. In the table, you can see our opinion about construction quality of particular iontophoresis machines. Anyway, every mentioned producer offers certain warranty that can also be considered while choosing the best iontophoresis machine for you.

Note: Other factors you should consider are dimensions and weight of the device. In the case you travel a lot, or if you want to use the device out of home, you should choose maybe a smaller and lighter device.

4. Price and Affordability

Question to ask:

  • How much am I willing to pay for iontophoresis treatment?
  • What did I expect for the price?
  • Is it a worthy option in long run?
  • How much does the shipping cost?

Iontophoresis Treatment CostThe price is, of course, very important factor in choosing any product. Generally, iontophoresis machines are more expensive, like antiperspirants. But in long run it seems to be a good investition for everybody who expects long-lasting effect and treatment without chemicals.

Another thing is shipping. Don’t forget to check if the shipping is included and in which location. If you are based in Europe, for example, and you want to order an iontophoresis machine from US or Canada, you have to count on customs expenses.

Note: The prices in the table are actual to the date when this article was published. For checking out an actual price, click on the particular website of the producer. These links can be found in the table or in the chapter: Iontophoresis machines overview.

5. Support

Questions to ask:

  • What is the support level of the brand?
  • What types of communication platform does the producer offer?
  • Who provides the service? Produced or distributor?

Since an iontophoresis machine is quite expensive, you don’t want to have a problem with it. And when something happens, you expect professional support. Well, before you buy some device, check what customer support is available.

Some companies, mostly the newer ones, put great emphasis on customer satisfaction and communication. They do it because of the effort to succeed in the competition. It is great because in the case of some problem, they react very prompt and you won’t lose your nerves.

Note: Some brands don’t offer support directly but only through their distributors. In this case, you should carefully check the particular distributor’s rules and support setting.

6. Availability

Questions to ask:

  • Do I need a prescription for buying the iontophoresis machine in my country?
  • Do I need to visit a doctor before buying the Iontophoresis machine?
  • Does my insurance cover the iontophoresis machine?

This is a very important point when thinking about iontophoresis machine, especially for people from US.

WARNING: For everybody based in the US! Some iontophoresis machines produced in the US are considered to be medical devices. It means you can not buy them if you are not a certified physician or if you don’t have a prescription from your doctor! This applies to devices RA Fisher, Electro Antiperspirant and Hidrex from our list.

Iontophoresis Procedure Step by Step

These are common steps of iontophoresis therapy:

  1. Connect electrodes to the device with cables
  2. In the case of palms or soles treatment, fill the containers with tap water. If you don’t treat hands or feet, attach electrodes to the affected part of the body (underarms, head, chest)
  3. Turn on the machine
  4. If possible, set the desired current, polarity and time of treatment
  5. Put your hands or feet to the containers or place electrodes to the affected part of the body and start treatment

Every iontophoresis machine has some specifics. Normally, a treatment session lasts 15-25 minutes according the treating body parts and used device. Since every iontophoresis machine has some specifics, before you start treatment, read carefully the manual, and follow the recommended instructions.

Effectiveness of Iontophoresis

Many kinds of research were made that had proven the high efficiency of iontophoresis procedure. Most of these studies show significant improvement in 85%-98% of patients after 2 weeks of using. Most of these patients also recorded improved quality of life. Compatibility of iontotherapy with a lifestyle of patients was also being researched and reached level of 78,6% after 2 weeks.

The effect of iontophoresis treatment depends on several factors:

  • Severity of hyperhidrosis
  • Used iontophoresis machine
  • Current type
  • Current level
  • Treatment time and frequency

Most of the patients recorded a decrease of sweat level after 2, maximally 3 weeks of using an iontophoresis machine. Since Return Policy of most producers is about 60 days, if you are not satisfied after 2 weeks, you can return the product.

Who is Iontophoresis For?

Excessive hand sweatingIontophoresis is a reasonable and recommended option for everybody who suffers from primary hyperhidrosis, what is excessive sweating affecting certain parts of the body. Actually, it is a reasonable solution for everybody who:

  • wants to stop excessive hand, feet or underarm sweating
  • prefers hyperhidrosis treatment without using chemicals
  • expects a long-lasting anti-sweat effect
  • is able to take some time to treat
  • tried an antiperspirant without a satisfactory result

Is Iontophoresis Safe?

Iontophoresis has been used as a procedure for excessive sweating treatment since the 1940s. Safety and effectiveness of this method are proved and cleared by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health authority organizations across the world. Most of iontophoresis devices have systems for maximum voltage limiting.  Some of them also have certain function that ensures higher comfort and safety when using the device. (polarity changing, soft start, controllable current level).

Possible Side Effects of Iontophoresis

As every treatment for whatever condition, Iontophoresis has some possible side effects. You can experience:

  • Skin irritation

Alternatives to Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis vs. Antiperspirant

natural deodorant and body odorWhile over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants block sweat glands by certain chemicals (mostly aluminum chloride), Iontophoresis works on different principle. The iontotherapy requires more time, and results are visible later, but they are more stable and long-lasting. Effect of antiperspirants comes very soon, but it leaves sooner. While an average price for iontophoresis machine is quite high, in long run it should be better alternative like antiperspirants.

Iontophoresis vs. Botox

Injection of botulinum toxin belongs to very effective treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) . Botox procedure can suppress sweating for months. On the other hands, botox is more pricy, and there are more possible side effects related to using chemicals in treatment. Botox injections have to be applied by a dermatologist while iontophoresis can be performed at home.

Iontophoresis vs. Miradry

MiraDry is an interesting medical option of hyperhidrosis treatment that uses microwaves to reduce sweating. While results are very good, the disadvantages of MiraDry are price, needed medical assistance, and the limitation in term of the affected bodily area (only armpits).

Iontophoresis vs. ETS surgery

During Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS), a surgeon permanently removes sweat glands. It is invasive method that is usually used for the most complicated and serious cases of abnormal sweating. Possible side effects are much higher in comparison with other non-surgical procedures. Expenses for This surgery are very high, but results are very compelling.
